Abstract :A recently-published textbook for teaching Japanese in Japanese elementary schools contains the myth of the "Conquest of Yamata-no-Orochi" as retold by Ryo Kisaka, based on the classical myth in the Kojiki. The present paper compares this retelling with other versions found in picture books for children as well as with the original Kojiki version, in order to elucidate the elements designed to make it more interesting to elementary-school-age children. First, it was found that the Kisaka version begins in a way that disconnects the narrative almost completely from the contents of the section immediately preceding it, thereby facilitating the enjoyment of an independent story. Also for this purpose, a description of the offering of the Kusanagi Sword to the goddess Amaterasu-O-Mikami is entirely omitted. Furthermore, there is a blurring of the distinction between the high status of Susano-no-Mikoto (who descends from the heavenly realms called Takama-no-Hara), and the lower one of Ashinazuchi (who merely dwells upon the earth). Other elements include the omission of graphic details involved in the conquest of Yamata-no-Orochi, simplifying and softening the effect for children. Overall, the adaptations in the retelling therefore made the myth more accessible and enjoyable for young readers, while nevertheless remaining faithful to the original Kojiki version.
学校図書から発行されている小学校国語科教科書には、きさかりょうによるヤマタノヲロチ退治神話の再話作品が採用されている。古事記の神話を基にしているこの作品では、子ども達に親しみやすい作品となるよう、どのような工夫がなされているかについて明らかにするために、古事記ならびに他の絵本作品と比較した。その結果、独立した物語として親しめるよう、前段との繋がりに極力触れない書き出しになっており、それに対応して、草薙剣 (くさなぎのつるぎ) のアマテラスオオミカミへの献上の下りが省かれている、高天 (たかま) の原から降りてきたスサノオノミコトと地上世界の神であるアシナヅチとの間に明確な階層差を設けていない、グロテスクな描写を省きオロチ退治の場面の描き方をあっさり描くにとどめている等の特徴があることが分かった。原典に寄り添いつつ、幼い読み手にとって親しみやすい再話となるよう工夫されている作品であると言える。
