Abstract :How can we improve the existing system of teaching Japanese to adult learners resident in Japan? In an attempt to provide a solution, dedicated classes focusing on teaching the Japanese kanji to adults were set up with the support of a local government agency. In order to help assess results, a questionnaire was given to adult learners of Japanese, some of whom had signed up for the class. Progress made in class, the results of the questionnaire (qualitative and quantitative), and a literature review led us to conclude that there was a benefit to be seen from the kanji classes for adult learners of Japanese whose first language was not English, while a clear benefit could not be seen for those whose L1 was English.
