1. The remains of Katabe - Kanoura Coast Quarry are at Tochu - Minamikatabe in Sado City. The present state of the area is an ordinary public coast, wilderness and others. 2. The remains are located over the exposed rocks or reefs below the coastal terraces, 0 to 20m from the sea level, and the area is approximately 142,000m2. 3. The sites were quarries where stone materials (granitoid conglomerate) were quarried to supply plenty of mine mortars (lower parts) to Aikawa gold and silver mines. 4. The sites were opened up between the Genna (1615 ~ 1624) and the Kanei (1624 ~ 1645) according to the historical sources. Then, quarrying continued until the third decades the Showa (1926 ~ 1986). 5. In Edo Period stone materials from the sites were carried by river to Shimo-Aikawa where they were processed to be mine mortars (lower parts). 6. The sites were researched from 2008 to 2009 with a view to deciding the boundaries of the remains to conserve them. The researched area was 10,000,000m2. 7. The research showed that the sites had wedge quarry holes, traces of such holes and chisel marks, typical for quarry remains. 8. The identified remains include quarrying spaces (14) where rocks were quarried, and wedge quarry holes and their traces (105). 9. Observing distribution of remains, I can assume that they were pursing better quality for rocks, because wedge quarry holes and their traces can be found at various locations including exposed rocks along the coast line, steep cliffs and water’s edges. 10. It is not possible to determine the exact number of wedge quarry holes and others due to weathering and wearing. However, the fact that larger wedge quarry holes including traces with the size of approximate 9 to 12cm tended to increase rapidly suggests quarry industry developed extensively from early to middle Edo Period as the demands for mine mortars at Aikawa gold and silver mines. 11. Judging from the research results of site distribution and historical sources, I consider quarry began in Site I in early Edo Period (Genna); the quarry area extended to the north; then the center of quarry moved to the Site VII and the area around it in the middle of Edo Period. 12. Lots of masses of rock with wedge quarry holes including traces were discovered in Site VII. Considering the discovered masses of rock were of secondary elaboration, I conclude they were doing rough dividing of rock at sites before loading them on the boats.
