Abstract :This report is concerned with the practical application of conversation analysis (CA) for Japanese language instruction, and displays how CA’s distinctive approach can contribute to an awareness-raising pedagogy which seeks to develop the students as reflective conversationalists. In class, students focused on “repair”, and analyzed second language conversations comparatively alongside key features of conversations by native speakers. In this report, the procedure of the activity and the learners’ own findings will be presented. In addition, this paper will discuss the potential of this activity to raise learners’ awareness of conversational features and to enhance their abilities to incorporate these features better in their own everyday conversations.
