Abstract :One of the most critical issues to reduce durability of thermal spray coating systems is spallation of coating. The adhesion strength is a measure to express a resistance to spalling of the coating and it has been often evaluated by tensile method. e.g. the JIS standard; JIS H 8402. However, there are some problems in tensile method, e.g. the result is strongly affected to the specimen size. Especially, JIS H 8402 can’t be applied to evaluation of the adhesion strength of actual coated components because of requiring a relatively large specimen. In this study, an evaluation method of the interfacial strength in thermal spray coating systems by means of an instrumented indentation machine is proposed. Based on the experimental formula for the fracture toughness of monolithic ceramics, we expressed an apparent interfacial strength in function of the maximum indentation load (P), the apparent Young’s modulus at the interface (E_I), the half diagonal length of impression (a) and the half length of interfacial crack (c) : K_c={ζ_1+ζ_2(c/a)}a/c^3/2√<PE_I> where, ζ_1, ζ_2 are material constants, By using the instrumented indentation machine and the above equation, the interfacial strength can be evaluated without the loading dependence and the scatter.
