|Abstract ||:||The Vilsmeier formylation of N,N-dimethylaniline (1) with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and phosphorus oxychloride or pyrophosphoryl chloride was carried out by using microwave (MW) irradiation and 4-N,N-dimethylbenzaldehyde (2) was obtained quantitatively accompanying with small amounts of 2-N,N-dimethylbenzaldehyde (8) and 4-N,N-dimethylisophthalaldehyde(3). The yield of compound 3 was increased with increasing a molar ratio of DMF and pyrophosphoryl chloride, whereas the yield of compound 2 was decreased. When compound 1 was treated with N-methylformanilide(NMFA) and pyrophosphoryl chloride by using MW irradiation, compound 2 was obtained in good yields. The reaction time by using MW irradiation was markedly shorter than that by using continuous heating.|
